The Virgin Mary appeared to Juan Diego on the Hill of Tepeyac. She told Juan Diego to build a church on the hill to honor her. When Juan Diego told the Archbishop of Mary appearing to him, the Archbishop instructed Juan to ask Mary for a sign that she was the Virgin Mary. Mary ordered Juan Diego to fill his tilma with roses and take it to the archbishop. When Juan Diego showed the roses to the Archbishop there on his tilma was the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
